Message:  “The Paul Problem”

THE PAUL PROBLEM

The apostle Paul had a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus.  He was blinded by a bright light, heard the voice of Jesus Christ, and was healed by Ananias.  There was no doubt in Paul’s mind about what Christ was calling him to do, so he began preaching the good news to all who would listen.  When we compare our faith stories to Paul’s, most of us did not have such a dramatic event that is so clear and precise.  Many of us were more like Timothy who was raised in the faith by his mother and grandmother.  Timothy never knew a time when he was not a Christian.  Does that mean that Timothy’s experience is some how less valid than Paul’s? No, both experiences of Jesus Christ are legitimate.  Yet, for many Timothy Christians who have no dramatic story to tell, we feel like we have little to share about our experience.  Join me this week as we discover that whether we are a Timothy or a Paul, we have an important faith story to share.  Please read Acts 9:1-19 to prepare for worship.

IOWA MISSION TRIP

Disciples Homeland Ministries Volunteer Office has set up three sites in Iowa for flood clean-up and relief.  The Illinois Valley Cluster will be signing up ten volunteers for a three-day mission trip to Coralville/Iowa City.  We will be staying at First Christian Church in Coralville and will be doing clean-up activities in homes and grounds for a full three days.  There is no cost to stay at First Christian; but we will be buying and fixing our own food and will be sharing the cost of gas expenses.  We will be traveling to Coralville (about 2 ½ hours away) late Sunday afternoon or early evening on October 26th, and work Oct. 27-29 (Mon.-Wed.)  We will head home either Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.  Karen will be going on this trip.  Please let her know soon if you are interested, as well.  The ten volunteer slots may fill up quickly.
